THOMAS BIGELOW grows up in the protected world of British society while his twin ERIC FRIEDLER struggles to survive in the impoverished Germany of the 1930s. Despite the fact that neither boy is ever told he is a twin, an inexplicable bond exists between them. When Eric is hurt, Thomas cries out in shared pain. When Thomas’ adoptive mother dies, Eric imagines it is HANNAH, their birth mother. And when Thomas meets LILY, she becomes the woman of Eric’s dreams. In the last days of WWII, as British troops enter Germany, cosmic forces appear to be pushing the twins closer and closer together. Their shared dreams are more vivid and more frequent. The unexplained feelings begin to consume them until they finally come face to face on the battlefield. The shock of meeting his twin sends Eric off the deep end. After nearly killing his brother, he assumes Thomas’ identity and sets out to find Lily. Thomas is oddly liberated by his brother’s betrayal. Rather than rush home to confront him, he stays in Germany and explores Eric’s world, ultimately locating the mother that abandoned them both. A series of discoveries makes Thomas realize he prefers his own life to his brother’s, and he heads back to London to pick up where he left off. But Eric has created a home with Lily and is not about to surrender the life he always dreamed of. Thomas’ carefree veneer quickly dissolves when confronted with losing everything he took for granted. With their identities twisted and intertwined, the brothers have one last battle to fight. |
