Ukrainian Maya Deren was a revolutionary experimental surreal filmmaker admired by David Lynch, Helen Mirren & others. Like Harrington & Kenneth Anger who were inspired by her, she attacked Hollywood & was a gestaltist deeply rooted in Kabbalah practices & also filmed famed novelist Anias Nin. This short is protected by the National Film Registry & the beautiful Maya herself is featured in this film about daydreams.
I have her collected short films, they are sublime. She was very much into the unconscious, symbolism, and psychology.
Wow. That is rather fortunate! Once one knows her work, one can see her impact everywhere.
I had to report the link just now but I will be replacing it. :)
Cool beans. Itβs a good short. For 1943, itβs quite special. She used great editing techniques. She was also a dancer, so had good eye for form & fluidity.
Done.
Rightio. Hope you had a chance to enjoy her work.
