Gloria remembers the extreme poverty of her fatherless childhood. Her mother expected her to support herself after she graduated from high school. She tried several entry-level jobs, none of which held a future for her. Then she married Robert Shapiro, a successful businessman. Now she enjoys the benefits of a financially secure life. Gloria adores her six-year-old son, lives in an upscale suburban home, and allows herself to be pampered by her husband. But she never tells Robert about Evelyn, her half sister, who is a convicted felon. She wants to spare him the shame and embarrassment she feels because this criminal is a member of her family. Shortly before Gloria and Robert’s eighth anniversary, Evelyn is released from prison. Jealous of Gloria’s good fortune, Evelyn steals her sister’s identity and wipes out her savings account. Robert accuses his wife of sending the money to her mother without consulting him. Gloria denies doing this, but fears that Robert does not believe her. To save her marriage, Gloria finally discloses her family’s awful secret and explains how Evelyn took her bank card to carry out the theft. Robert forgives his wife for her previous lack of candor. Gloria and Robert emerge from their crisis with more trust and affection for each other. |
