This film charts the creation of internationally renowned artist Kara Walker’s monumental sculptural project, ‘A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby’ (2014) at the Domino Sugar Factory in Brooklyn, New York. Inspired by her extensive research into the history of the Caribbean sugar trade and the molasses-covered factory space itself, Walker creates a colossal sugar-coated sphinx as well as a series of life-size sugar and resin boy figures. Commissioned by the New York City art-commissioning organization Creative Time, ‘A Subtlety’ is the first large-scale public project by Walker who is best known for her cut paper silhouette drawings. |
