With Don’t Watch Me Dancing, we are trying to tell a story that involves a unique connection between two characters and the external circumstances that foster their “unconventional” relationship. While each character’s superficial motives are clear, they underscore the complex fabric of the human condition. Don’t Watch Me Dancing provides a glimpse into a shadowy, private world that might be considered taboo in the public realm. We seek to provide a distinct narrative, accompanied by lingering tensions that disclose deeper levels of meaning. The bizarre chemistry between the two characters and the trajectory of their relationship is left open to subjective interpretation - is it charming, or unsettling? We would like to begin with a clearcut narrative surrounding a young Amish girl. As she is shown becoming distant from her friends, we discover that she has a secret cell phone in her possession (modern technology is largely shunned by the Amish) and discover that this is part of a much larger secret she is keeping from her family and friends. She is covertly breaking away from traditional dress and etiquette practiced by the Amish and meeting with a strange man in a mansion in the woods. His strange presence regularly gives way to mysterious plot points. We are uncertain whether the isolated character has inherited this beautiful home, losing his mind and hiding out there, or seeking shelter and avoiding society. He has a pre-arranged agreement with the Amish girl to deliver his groceries for him. We are forced to question this characters intention and backstory. The two characters share a nervously passionate dance with each other by the end of the piece, but are interrupted by something that leaves us searching for answers. In telling the story this way, our objective is to generate an anxious, threatening, atmosphere in which nothing is certain. |
