In a country with 72 ethnic languages, 7 National languages and 1 official language, which language would you want your child to learn? This affectionate, revealing and often humorous documentary paints a portrait of a rural Zambian grade one class and their embattled young urban teacher. A class where the teacher speaks one languages, the students another, and they must learn the countries only official language, English. Through the window of the young teacher, and homesick mother, Annie, the film tells the story of the class over a year, from the rains to harvest, from the heat of March to the cold and crop burning of August, seeing Annie and her children adapt to each others worlds, and languages. |
