Million dollar legs Betty Grable & Carmen Miranda. Full color eye candy with Don Ameche, funny Charlotte Greenwood, gigolo Leonid Kinskey, the outstanding dancing of The Nicholas Brothers as well as The Dowlings among other specialty dancers. It’s a screwy pic about horse-trading & grudges gone wrong.
Carmen opens the picture with South American Way then later does her signature Mamae Eu Quero while Don & Betty also get 2 tunes including the title track. It’s impossible to take one’s eyes off of this spectacular. If Fran Drescher were born earlier as a South American, she would’ve been Carmen. And Betty… wow! The Nicholas Brothers! Splits splits splits splits! Totally glad that 14 year old Betty lied about her age to get an edge into entertainment & later begin her leading lady picture career with this National Registry film.
Love rewatching this fllick. The misunderstandings that lead to hijinx & the great tunes.
Sometimes it is so refreshing to watch movies from the golden age of cinema. I’m a huge fan of movies from 30’s and 40’s. I’ve been watching a bunch of WWII movies that I knew nothing about, and I thought I had seen most of them. Great Britian has some wonderful WWII movies and it is wonderful to see the war from another country’s perspective. I often wonder how Great Britian kept the Germans at bay for as long as they did before the US entered the war. I think Hitler underestimated the Brits and he thought he would save taking GB much later because he thought it would be easy. Boy, was he wrong.
