Bankruptcy forces William Ziel to return to the farm he inherited from his estranged father in an attempt to start a new life with his young, fragmented family. Lazarus, the farm hand who took care of William’s father Frederick in his lonely final hours, reappears soon after William, Sarah and adopted daughter Mary, arrive at Hemelop- Aarde. A supposed chance meeting between Mary and Lazarus develops into a bond between two kindred spirits. But Lazarus, the old soul who struggles to find peace in this place of sad memories, carries a dark secret that constantly haunts him: the demon child with its insatiable appetite for human souls that weighs so heavily in the sack he carries everywhere with him. Despite Sarah’s misgivings, this unfathomable character wins over William and Mary. At first, Sarah’s apprehension seems unfounded but, judging by the reaction of the local community to his return from wanderings afar, she may be right and the Ziels’ newfound domesticity could be at risk. A series of disturbing events unfolds: first the old woman dying at the kraal, then the killing in the dark forest causes the circle to draw closer to include the Ziels. Can they survive unscathed?

First thing, I felt like I missed out on quite some content, because there were no subtitles when the villagers would converse, or when Lazarus would talk to the fiend. That really annoyed me, because subs don’t bother me. So that cooled things for me. I kept waiting for something to happen, but it never did. And there was so much material here to make a solid horror movie. South African horror movies are not mainstream, and I’m quite receptive to their vision of horror. Everything was ripe for a creepy-ass movie. The house, the land is was on, weird people roaming around, black and white magic, a demon-child that actually creeped the sh*t out of me (rare feat there) etc… And legends in a folklore not many people are familiar with, me included. Great! I was excited when the movie started. Then it went nowhere. We got a very generic storyline, with under-developed characters. I am a bit disappointed, I wanted to like this movie more. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie, just that it could’ve been so much better. Good for a one-time watch. Keita Luna with her big, beautiful blue eyes, stole the show for me.
Subs are out on the net:

Turned out to be a pretty good movie.
Different, well made, well acted. The director, etc. were very good at building the tension and suspense without being tedious. IMDB’s 6.9 rating was pretty accurate for a change.
This was looking like a good story but English subs are needed in what seemed like important parts, starting at about 28 min.
