Happy Song for You collapses the intimacy of personal pathos with the remote distress of the social/political environment at large as it moves wordlessly through eerie landscapes peopled by sticks, rocks, a dried dog corpse, a pair of overalls wearing a wig, an old man. A battery operated piggy bank needs feeding, the dog corpse needs comfort, a wily taxidermy shark head interrupts the calm with demanding barks. Miniature mise-en-scenes are inter-cut with human scale live action to reveal humor, empathy, and a deadpan acceptance of death amidst cobwebs, dirt, muddy water, pink satin sheets and blood. Made with legendary painter Llyn Foulkes, with original music composed and performed by Foulkes, Happy Song features intricate sound and set design, visceral editing and poetic brevity.
