‘Laney’s Eighteenth’ follows Laney, an adolescent girl suffering from various psychological disorders, who fatefully decides to leave the protective confines of her care center on the eve of her eighteenth birthday. As the new day approaches Laney’s mother, Barbara, and Dr. Reynolds, must find a way to cope with a broken family and a patient now considered of legal age. Laney’s decision puts her on the brink of the unknown, leaving the audience to wonder if Laney is about to embark into the haunting possibility of homelessness or if her story is being recounted from a present life of destitution. Told from the perspective of Laney, ‘Laney’s Eighteenth’ takes you inside the mind of someone coping with a mental disorder while exploring the complex legal issues surrounding institutional mental health centers, family denial, and homelessness among the mentally ill. |
