Indian Ocean, the summer of 1662. A sailing ship of the Dutch East India Company is caught in a storm in the wide seas. After a short struggle with the raging waters, the ship sinks. A single sailor survives, cast up on the shore of the Mauritius Island. Hungry and exhausted, the sailor manages to build a fire. After a while, a promising supper appears in the form of a fat, tame bird - the dodo. However, his Lucullan feast is interrupted by an unpleasant surprise. The barbecue does not stay in the bowels of the protagonist for long, flung back to the midst of the green foliage of Mauritius. Yet the spasmodic contractions of the sailor’s stomach do not go unheeded. Father Boniface, the superior of the local mission, emerges from the jungle. Enthusing over the beauties as well as nutritive values of tropical nature, he leads the sailor to the mission, introducing him to two more monks; the rather unmanly gambler Ignace and the rather thick-headed macho Igor. The mission plunges into darkness. Lightning crosses the sky. The monks are playing cards in the chapel while the sailor wakes up from his nightmares in the dormitory. Nobody knows that tonight, the curse of the Last of the Dodos will come true… The film was inspired by a real adventure of a Dutch sailor Volkert Evertsz, including the cute dodos, greedy monks and divine punishment for human greed. It presents the parallel between the extinct species of tropical nature and the local inhabitants who were bereaved of their culture, land and finally lives by European conquerors. The dodo was last seen in the wild in 1662. Along with the dodo, 24 bird species have been exterminated by man at the Mauritius Island. |
