The Companion is a ten minute short ghost story in the tradition of M.R James, Charles Dickens and Edgar Allen Poe. The film examines themes of isolation, loneliness and the universal fear of the unknown. Mark (James Groom) left home as a young man in search of a new life in the countryside, tired of what he perceived as a degenerative society and the increasing homogeneity of life in general. Mark is at home in the wild, a competent outdoors man actively shunning human interaction and seeking out ever more isolated locales. Mark’s travels take an unfortunate turn when he seeks shelter in a Neolithic burial site, copying down the inscription he finds there. From that moment on Mark is plagued by a Spectre; his every move pursued by an unknowable, malevolent force. Mark’s nomadic, isolated lifestyle is changed forever, forcing him to seek out the crowd and bustle of the society he had shunned for so long. |
