Based on a true story during World War 2, Mud Lounges is an introspective journey into the thoughts and emotions of a young soldier artist. Through his eyes, he describes a war in a totally different way, fighting of course with the enemy, but above all with himself and with his fears. The protagonist, Pasquale, during a truce in the trenches, reflects on what is going on: his life is hanging by a thread. What if this wire got broken? What would become all the dreams and hopes he has for the future? Right there, he meets a friend, Salvatore, a confident man, whose values of freedom and family help him to face the hardships. He remembers his daughter Sofia and hopes to see her again. The only way to win the war, is fighting with the body and spirit, moulding his own nature and exploiting his own fears to get stronger. By comparing their expectations, the two soldiers are able to freed themselves from the war and they live some moments of serenity: they sit in “mud lounge,” a grotesque situation, which recalls artists and writers meeting in the Lounges of ‘900. Right here the young soldier, talking with his friend, has an epiphany: he wants to create a picture representing a couple of wings, but he doesn’t know which colour assign them. The subject was conceived from the director Fabio Cento and Roberta Mangiapane, the screenplay was written by Cento with a well-known artist from Aosta Valley, Manuel Riccardi. The short film was entirely produced and directed by Fabio Cento. The leading actors are Pierre Lucat, in the role of Salvatore and Anthony Circiello, as Pasquale. The shooting took place between November 2011 and January 2012 in Aosta Valley.
