Juvenile prisons are currently ‘home’ to almost 70,000 young people in the U.S.A. In Maine, three women, known as Maine Inside Out (MIO), work with incarcerated youth helping them to create and perform original plays about their lives. MIO’s process, steeped in Augusto Boal’s Theater of the Oppressed, is the catalyst for kids to express themselves while dealing with the realities of incarceration. Follow their story as we go inside Maine’s Long Creek Youth Development Center and travel with the troupe outside to public performances in a tale of punishment, personal expression and change. |
