Twenty year old Mark Riley gets arrested for smoking pot and is court-ordered to do community service at a church food bank. Pastor Claymore, a devout Christian leader and recent widower is the pastor. Sarah, his college age daughter helps run the Food Bank. Mark, too has lost a parent: his dad, to cancer. Mark uses song-writing, charm and humor to attract Sarah and at the same time deflect his own sorrow. Sarah hides her pain behind a “religious” mask and obsessive perfectionism. Pastor Clayman is wary of Mark and keeps watch over his attentions to his only daughter. Sarah is emotionally shut-down, but Mark’s wit and musicality (he composes songs, plays the guitar and piano) slowly win him a glimpse into Sarah’s broken heart. She finally trusts Mark enough to reveal her creative secret and he accidentally discovers her shame-filled method for coping. |
