Statistically, Mixed Martial Arts is the fastest growing sport in the World. Although critics will be quick to point out that the perception of 2 humans “going at it” for 15 minutes trying to workout how to hurt their opponent sufficiently enough to stop the fight is just not a sport. Arguably the time, effort and discipline required by these athletes coupled with the will to win does make a good case for the argument it is a sport. Competitors in the cage are aware that one of them is going to lose, primal instinct takes over and self preservation kicks in, suddenly…… Why would you do that?!? For centuries man has tried new ways to test themselves, climbing mountains, jumping out of planes and deep sea exploration, all equally dangerous, MMA is no different. From the amphitheatres of Rome and beyond to Greece and medieval Britain we have sought to test and compete at a physical level. Most of these men have a dual persona, the spartan and the lover, and it is this juxtapose that makes the whole thing fascinating. This duality defines the continuing struggle these warriors face daily in order to become ‘Superhuman’ or at very least perform superhuman feats, whilst maintaining a family life and in some cases a full time job. Join us on this voyage of discovery, following the lives of 4 professional mixed martial artists, there ups down victories and failures, inside the cage and beyond, the fight continues. |
