Lewi is a middle aged blind man searching for independence and love. Unable to cope with the emotional immediacy with an attractive younger girl (Summer), he is struck down by a car while fleeing the scene and hospitalised. Summer nurses him to health but his agoraphobia binds him into his apartment. Out of sympathy Summer has become more of a carer, but she still loves him. In-front of the TV in his small lonely apartment he captures a fly, listening to it buzz in the cup of his hands. He maims it of wings, a metaphor for himself; he is the fly trapped in a cell unbeknownst to the boundary of the walls in-which it is captured. Summer doesn’t escape this metaphor, she’s a vulnerable woman with clipped wings who’ll jump at his behest. Lewi needs food, and chicken, canned whole chicken. Summer keeps bringing the wrong brand which Lewi can’t open from lack of easy open ring pulls. He seduces her to bring more groceries, Summer can’t refuse. In preparation for her arrival Lewi begins to shave. Imagining himself in-front of the mirror sends him on a downward spiral of introspection; if he can’t see his own reflection then what has he become? Does he exist? He accidentally cuts himself while day-dreaming, the doorbell rings. Summer feels sorry for him but is dismissive. Lewi can’t assess the situation but takes a leap of faith, he makes a poor attempt at intimacy, Summer recoils. He becomes angry at himself but takes it out on Summer. In attempt to extinguish the situation she reveals his requested groceries but the wrong brand of chicken yet again. Lewi blows a fuse; she can’t get it right even with the gift of sight, he swings and knocks her out with one of the cans. Lewi’s turmoil comes to boiling point. He humiliates, tortures, and rapes her with his white-cane. In a ceremonial dinner he cannibalises her eyes and is rewarded with the gift of sight. |
