Quite a good film centered around a kid played by Skyler Gisondo. He’s a bit of a hustler when he wants to save his sick dawg, so he makes a deal with an escaped mental patient played by Katrina Bowden to try to make the unobtainable $10,000 bux needed. Skyler’s mom is a rather sweet but rough drunk Kristen Chenoweth. The girl at school he wants is Hannah Marks.
No idea if the film was written for Skyler, but he owns it & brings you in. Chenoweth & Bowden are very good at each playing against type. For as much as we dig Hannah, her part really could’ve been left out & it wouldn’t have changed the story at all. Her purpose is at the end, but could’ve been achieved otherwise. There’s other problems. Such as where did this kid & his incompetent mom get the money to live where they live & send him to the really richy private school where the trouble starts. Who pays for all of this stuff? The bills? Not them. As written, the setting should’ve been in a slum-lord rent house & at a public school. Would’ve been more believable & relatable.
If that is suspended & one focuses on the good performances, it’s a nice flick.
