When war broke out in 1914, Revd Geoffrey Studdert-Kennedy was one of the first to enlist. He volunteered as a military chaplain, and although a non-combatant himself, encouraged everyone who was able to sign-up for military service. This enthusiasm quickly began to wane as he saw for himself the horrors of war and the suffering that was inflicted on troops from both sides. The wholesale slaughter of the battlefields on the Western Front caused many to question and even abandon their faith, but Studdert Kennedy held tenaciously to his Christian beliefs. His struggle to make sense of this, and to find answers to the many questions that the men in the trenches were asking him are captured in his writings which are brilliantly brought to life by David Robinson in this series of compelling short films. |
