Eva Maria is a 40 years old English teacher. She likes dancing and she lives with her 16 years old son. Every day of the week she leads a conventional life. Every day but Thursday. On Thursdays she goes next to the river and starts dancing in a circle with 7 others. The dances are part of the ritual called ‘conchería’. And our main character, Eva acts as a ‘Malinche’ (Priestess). The ‘concheria’ is an Aztec tradition whose origins can be traced in Mexico at the time of the ‘olmecas’. It is one of those few traditions that have endured after the colonisation and the forced conversion to Catholicism. The ritual had to survive underground, underneath the surface of Catholicism. This is Eva’s double life. |
