This is the adaptation of Nikos Chatziapostolou’s operetta by the same name. It takes us back to the old Athens of 1920, where we watch the comical erotic adventures of an “apache”. It was presented as the first Greek sound film, with its soundtrack (songs only), played on gramophone records. The basic roles were played by opera singers, who also appeared on stage: Ioannis Prineas, Petros Kyriakos and Marina Mantineiou. The story is about an “apache” (a street-urchin, a city tramp) whom they all call “Prince” and whose real name is Kostas. Kostas saves two naive people from a brutal beating. A pretty seamstress, Titika, who happens to come by, attends to his minor wounds, and they fall in love with each other. A week later, Kostas is paid to impersonate a Byzantine prince at the reception of a newly rich family of Greek-American Xenofon Paralis, his pretty daughter Vera, and his spinster sister Areti. The family has just settled in Athens. Kostas flirts discreetly with Vera, who responds to his feelings. However, the arrival of Titika, who is bringing an outfit for Vera, leads to the exposure of the scheme, and Mr. Paralis kicks him out of the house. Later on, our hero comes into a sizable fortune, rolls up his sleeves and makes Titika’s dream of marrying well come true. |
