The wife falls in love with a coat that an itinerant peddler shows her, but her husband fumes when he hears that it is worth $100. He not only refuses to buy it, but he throws the peddler out of the house. Later, stung by remorse, he buys a coat for $6.05 and sends it to his wife with a $100 bill tucked in one of the pockets. She is delighted with it until she learns that her neighbor across the hall has one for $6.95 just like it. Then she throws it out of the window. A negro street cleaner picks it up and brings it home to his wife. When the husband comes home he finds his wife in tears. She tells him that she has thrown the coat out of the window. He tells her about the $100 and both start in search of it. He accosts every woman he sees and at last is arrested. His wife, meanwhile, finds the colored woman and starts a fight with her. She is brought to the station. There she learns that her husband must either pay $100 fine or go to jail for 100 days. But he finds the bill in the coat pocket and they leave the station arm in arm. |
