Details:

Innocent little baby of five summers that he is, Bobby believes the literal meaning of the doctor’s words to his father when he says, “she (Bobby’s mother) will die with the last of the falling leaves.” The words pall the youngster. While tenderly nursing his mother, Jimmie ventures a peep into the garden and sees to his horror, the golden brown and red tints on the stiff dry leaves, now rapidly falling and robbing the trees of all their foliage. He thinks of the doctor’s warning and hurries to the thicket to pick up the leaves as they fall, fancying that by keeping them off the ground, his mother has a much greater chance for life. But alas, little Bobby finds the task impossible and with a cry of despair rushes back to the bedside of his dear mother only to find her dead.
