Not all gay men are ‘girly’. The Bear movement has rejected this stereotype and celebrates masculinity- through girth, beards, and body hair. The Bears of San Francisco introduces several bears who live in The Castro- the gay capital of the USA. They have faced social rejection not only for being gay, but also from within the gay community because they are not slim and sleek. The bear culture they are a part of, which stretches around the world, provides people who have never fit in with a non-discriminatory group that promotes diversity and being yourself. The bears provide an answer to the universal need to feel part of something, or as one bear says, the drive to ‘find your tribe’. |
