Albert White Hat’s name in Lakota is Wapaha Ska meaning ‘White War Bonnet.’ He was a Lakota educator, author, linguist, tribal leader and respected elder in his community on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. In ‘Relatives,’ Albert guides the viewer through the Lakota creation story. He discusses hardships and oppression the first people of North America experienced beginning with the U.S. government’s outlawing of all spiritual practices in the late 1800’s through 1978. Albert offers a way forward, not only for the Lakota, but for all people. Weaved with stunning footage of the He Sapa (the Black Hills) and engaging sound design, ‘Relatives’ is a journey that will propel the viewer back to their roots in the natural world. |
