A RED CARPET FOR ASTA NIELSEN is author and artist Eva Tind’s personal documentary about silent movie star Asta Nielsen. In the film she follows in the footsteps of Denmark’s first world star, driven by curiosity as to why Asta Nielsen, as big a name as Chaplin in her day, did not leave a more distinctive legacy. Eva seeks out locations and people associated with Asta Nielsen: actress Bodil Jorgensen; researcher Marguerite Engberg, who brought film studies to Denmark as an academic discipline; national treasure Ove Sprogø’s son, George, who met Asta Nielsen; and others who tell us about Asta Nielsen, presenting us with objects from her universe. Eva’s quest leads from Denmark to the Netherlands, Sweden and Germany, where Eva spends a night in Asta Nielsen’s former Berlin apartment and visits her holiday home (“summerhouse”) on the Baltic island of Hiddensee. The story ends in a townhouse in Denmark, where the actress Bodil Jørgensen invokes Die Asta. Places, people, selected silent movie clips and photographs create a collective documentary narrative centered on Asta Nielsen, opening a door from the present day onto her life and universe in an attempt to preserve her in aspic before she slips into oblivion. Briefly put, the film really is A RED CARPET FOR ASTA NIELSEN. |
