After a six-month strike, the fishermen of Bonavista, Newfoundland are once again heading out for the arctic waters of the Grand Banks, off Canada’s northeastern seaboard. Aboard the ZANDBERG, the 17 crew members work 18 hour days catching cod, mending nets, and praying to avoid any devastating squalls. After 10 days of trawling they return home for 48 hours of rest and unload their catch, which is immediately frozen and shipped to the Danvers plant, near Boston, where it will be processed. The entire community is controlled by a single company with the commercial intention of exploiting Newfoundland’s codfish. After their short reprieve, the fishermen return to sea to begin again their routine. The families must live with ships and men that come and go. |
