The documentary film “The Gypsy Baron” accompanies Artur Cherrari, the real democratically elected Baron of all Roma of the Republic of Moldova and thus the head of the Roma in Soroca, as well as Vale who might become Baron in future through the world of the Roma, illustrating their traditions, customs and everyday life. This involves issues such as the position of the Roma in Europe, their Soviet past, their work, their social structure, the role of men and women within the Roma society and their history, their future and their coping with everyday life. “The Gypsy Baron” was filmed in the week between Easter and “The Day of the Dead” and illustrates the issues described above during the preparation and celebration of these two holidays. |
