Details:

“Taikon - the Untold Story of a Freedom Fighter” focus on the 1960’s and 70’s and Roma activist and writer Katarina Taikon. Katarina was something as unique as a Swedish activist for human rights, who faught for the rights of a people that was left outside of every discussion, progress or movement in the rest of society. And she was a woman, a woman that people (white, male, in power) had no choice but to listen to. Because she was charismatic, intelligent, fearless and - she was right. The film uses uniqe archive footage that illustrates the different sides of society. Prosperity and poverty. Education and illiteracy. The Swedish model, and the ones that didn’t fit. Since Katarina was a celebrity at the time and later on a famous childrens books writer, there is plenty of footage. Family and friends participate in the film - and interviews provides a vivid testimony of Katarinas life and achivements. Katarina herself past away in 1995. The film deals with questions that concerns us all - human rights, migration, discrimination. It provide a historical background to the current situation in Europe, and for other groups in a similar situation - the entire world. The project is supported by The Swedish Film Institute.
