John Tilson had not been home since his brother Howard’s marriage; but now, business called him east, and Howard hurried from the office to advise his wife and small daughter that John might drop in upon them at any hour; cautioning them at the time not to be surprised at his rough western appearance. So impressed was little Florence at her father’s description of Uncle John that when she beheld the burglar, Bill Brody, in the sitting room, his revolver and slouch hat quite fitted the child’s idea of a westerner. The burglar was, therefore, almost taken off his feet by having the tiny miss address him as Uncle John. However, a letter from the real uncle, which Florence handed him from the table explained matters, and Bill decided to carry out the deception. Placing the child on a chair, he bade her remain quiet if she wished a fine box of candy, and straightway fell to work upon the safe. Effie had given the maid an evening off and Howard had been called out, so hearing a noise, for the little girl had dropped one of Bill’s tools, she crept softly downstairs, where she beheld the burglar and Florence. Fortunately she was able to slip quietly to the front door without betraying her presence, but as she opened the door, her eyes fell upon John Tilson, who had been pulling the bell violently but, as Bill had cut the wires, he received no response and Effie, mistaking him for the burglar’s pal, fled to her room. Here, by throwing a vase through the window next door, she notified Mrs. Dobbins to telephone for the police. When they arrives, however, Bill, backed by Florence, succeeded in getting them to handcuff the real uncle, who had stepped in through a window. But ere they could drag him away, Howard arrived, putting an end to the little masquerade. The officers turned to Bill, but that resourceful gentleman had already made a quick exit. As he had not succeeded in getting away with any booty, there was a general rejoicing that everything had ended to happily. |
