Ray Yao is the ‘best organiser of the China for punk rock bands!’ and Sham 69 are a bunch of middle-aged punks, the first British punk band to ever tour China. A 14 day slog across the length of breadth of China was a mind-blowing, intriguing, dumbfounding experience. Here was a country in the process of rebuilding and reinventing itself and here was a group at war with themselves and here was a developing passionate Chinese punk scene within a country in massive flux. And then there was Ray: the enthusiastic but inexperienced tour manager, the inept yet completely lovable tour manager who let confusion reign.
