Grandfather feels depressed and lonely after his wife died and even seems to get demented. He writes a letter to Santa Claus (Sinterklaas) and invites him to stay the night in his home. Sinterklaas is a Santa Claus-like character, visiting the Netherlands by the end of November, celebrating his birthday on December 6. On the eve of his birthday young children, who believe he is for real, await him and his assistant Zwarte Piet to surprise them with presents. These presents have been requested for in a letter and put in their children’s shoes, before they go to sleep at night. Now the grandfather has written a letter to Sinterklaas and put it in his shoe. He tells his grandson Sven about it.
