Providing an alternate, fictional, and darkly-comedic narrative for the start-up of the once-highly successful ‘Netflix’ company, ‘1999’ simultaneously comments on society’s past, current and ongoing dependence on media, while also serving as a thrilling, fictional, and provocative narrative. The film transports the viewer back to the year ‘1999,’ when video chains such as Hollywood Video and Blockbuster ruled the proverbial film distribution empire. This is also the year in which film-viewing and renting for the everyday (and serious) film-buff took a dramatic, intense, and almost poetic turn. It was the birth of ‘Netflix’ - a genuinely unique concept put into action, smothering it’s seemingly irrelevant competition. However, ‘1999’ embraces the concept of the ‘alternate history,’ providing a different story for the birth of ‘Netflix.’ |
