A Quixotic Greek-Canadian Cowboy holds on to his land, and struggles, seeking to pass the the torch to his unwilling Yuppie nephew. Nick Pappadapoulis, an ‘economically-challenged’ Greek Canadian cowboy, is a modern day Don Quixote, holding on to his land and his ‘Kefi’ (old world honor and Zorba-like vitality) against all odds in a ranching community that is being invaded by the industrialized/corporate world. He has daily conversations about his dreams, Visions and struggles with a Native Messenger who comes out of a Medicine Wheel that is on his land. The Wheel is a porthole to the Realm of Light, the Messenger begging Nick to come with him to where ‘he doesn’t have to fight’ before the door closes and it is too late. But Nick is determined to hold onto his land and his Kefi more than ever due to recent family developments. Nick’s brother, George, left the land to become a financial and corporate success, and is dying of cancer. George’s last wish is for Nick to pass on to his son, Dimitri, his Kefi, and sends Dimitri out to stay with Nick, cutting him off from all of his money and contacts until he acquires and champions Kefi. Such is made more difficult by the fact that Dimitri is a spoiled Yuppie brat who wants nothing to do with Nick’s world, and George made Nick promise to not tell Dimitri that he is dying, resulting in Dimitri hating his father even more than his uncle. As the battle between the modern world and Nick’s ideals escalates, the old man gets crazier and more dangerous than ever. In the middle is Dimitri, waffling between worlds and ideologies. On the sidelines is the Messenger whose job is to keep the rules of ‘heaven’ intact, but who empathizes more and more with those struggling on earth. |
