The story of Butterfly Town, USA takes place during a global crisis. Monarch numbers are dwindling rapidly. Every year, thousands of Monarchs migrate to Pacific Grove, CA. In 2009, the city heavily trimmed branches and gaps in the canopy were devastating. Monarch numbers dropped from nearly 18,000 to under 800. Volunteers planted 40 boxed trees to buffer the impact of the trimming. As a result, Monarch numbers increased by more than 500%. Motivated by their progress, volunteers planted more trees. which led to a clash between activists and city staff. about how to protect the Monarchs in ‘Butterfly Town USA.’ |
