Men suo or “The Door Lock” is a Chinese film, filmed in Xiamen, Fujian, China.
The cast includes some of China’s young stars, there are many and they are very good at what they do which helps carry this film through it’s uneven moments.
The story wanders and there is little foreshadowing but there is plenty of modern day China in the film and an array of characters who are interestingly enough not heavily overstated, this can be said of the drama as well.
Fortunately for me I just can not help but adore the Chinese and their approach to portraying the world. It’s a breath of fresh air in a world where we are usually bludgeoned for our abhorrent acceptance of poor and depraved entertainment.
Due to the films awkwardness I give it a 7 and therefore a recommendation, especially for anyone with interest in China and its people.
BTW, the film has hardcoded subtitles.
