Lana, a Senior in high school, and her Puerto Rican family become transplants in the SouthSide of Chicago after hurricane Maria destroys their home. Lana meets Caleb, an African American jock, and the pair have instant chemistry. Their high school love is tested when Lana’s family forbid her to date a black man. Their story continues to unfold as they choose love over family, but it comes at a high cost. Lana and Caleb’s story is a contemporary Romeo and Juliet saga, disentangling the stigmas around race, body image, mental health, culture, and social class. Lana and Caleb struggle overcoming the negativity, and become challenged in their own lives as they journey into building their very own family with a new set of Mixed Emotions.
