This movie brought back some childhood memories…..I was a young child of the 1960’s and I still remember the drills we had to do at school. We did what was called “duck and cover”. When the superintendent announced the drill, we would quickly get under our desks and cover our eyes. As if this would save us from a nuclear bomb! An air force base was about a 45 minute drive from my hometown. We often heard the sonic booms as jets flew over which of course scared the _out of us. We just knew it had to be the Russian bombers and after that first sonic boom, our teacher told us the jets were from the air base. Our parents never told us how close the US came to being nuked. It was years later in a US history class I learned how everyone was on pins and needles for days.
I was born in the early 70’s and as a kid in the early 80’s I remember watching movies like the “The Day After” and being scared s*itless.😲

In my freshman year of college I took a physics class (for non-math majors and was easier than regular physics) and had a lab to go with it. We saw a film about a nuclear blast and it was the first time that I ever saw such a film. This was in the early 80’s and even then it made me want to go out and build an underground bomb shelter! The Cuban missile crisis was an eye opening time for JFK’s administration! I think it was many years later when the American people were told how close we came to Nuke-Day! I was under the age of 5 at the time and learned about it years later in history class.
I have not watched this yet but probably should, was born in Oct. of ‘62. Heck of a time to be born…
by the late 60’s, early 70’s we updated this procedure to , get under desk, place head between knees, kiss your butt goodbye! we pretty much knew the only thing left of us would be our shadow on the surface closet to us at the the time of the explosion
Wow, what an incredible true underdog story. It made me cry and definitely had me on edge more than a few times. They were both so brave but I guess you wouldn’t have a choice once you had gone so far, there would be no backing out. Scary stuff
Is there supposed to be translation of the Russian language at the beginning? I don’t want to keep watching if I’m supposed to be seeing something that I’m not. I’ve already loaded the subtitles.
“The Spy who Saved the World” should be required reading for every High School Senior in the U.S. right now more than ever. Really well done Cold War movie.
I so agree with you and what is happening now with the war in Ukraine and Russia’s threats to the western allies has me a bit on edge.
I haven’t finished it yet. Wondering why it wasn’t uploaded with the Russian translations. Have to keep turning the closed cap on and off. Pain in the ass.
eff 04/16 : New HD Versions! This update provides clear Video and clean Audio!
The problem is that the Russian isn’t translated on the screen. Should have been uploaded with it.
eff 03/22 : Brand New HDCAM Versions. You will experience occasional adverts and open-mic audio.
5/5 WOW a must watch
Great insight and information. I never heard of this story. I know there was this happening but to shine a light on the two biggest players was an eye opener. Very good movie. 8/10
Incredible story of bravery and two men that may have saved the world. Great great historic story!
Id love to see this as a type of reality show.
Edit: just saw a great title for the show and also location (it writes itself). “Kim’s convenience” and I don’t think I’ll say the country.
