Shot entirely from the fixed perspective of the peephole of my door, ‘Doctor Korbes’ is a 34 minute documentary that explores the obsessive behavior shared between the filmmaker and his compulsively hoarding neighbor. The film starts with the day I moved into a flat in a low rent district of Berlin, Germany, and chronicles the strange events leading up to Dr. Korbes’ eviction from the flat he has lived in for over 25 years. With parallels to the Brothers Grimm children’s tale ‘Mr. Korbes’ (which describes an unseen man who is mysteriously disliked by all his household possessions), this film challenges the convention of the cinematic gaze by confronting the audience with identification as both the voyeur and viewed at the same time. |
