Edgar Del Campo is a Chicano young adult that still lives in downtown LA housing projects with his parents. While his family is very Catholic, Edgar has found fulfillment in a traditional Japanese Church. The Japanese customs and rituals were once completely foreign to him, but this tiny church, the Tenrikyo Brotherhood Church, has been in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of East LA for decades and is especially open to local non-Japanese worshipers. Edgar is not the only brown face in the crowd. During the Sunday service, he is enthusiastic about participating in the ritual motions and Japanese singing that the service involves. His parents, on the other hand, are Mexican immigrants who struggle to understand his mysterious new faith. Edgar finds balance in his commitment to his family and the development of his own identity. |
