For Silence follows an old man as he returns to the once vibrant mining community of his childhood, now an abandoned ghost town amidst the vast wilderness of western Canada. The short film was conceptualized as a precursor to a feature documentary that explores the many connotations of the hard-to-pin-down phenomenon of silence through several character studies. Part documentary and part fiction, For Silence presents itself as a hybrid storytelling experiment as it features an existing ghost town and its history and merges it with the journey of a fictional character portrayed by actor Thomas Orr-Loney. For Silence aims to evoke a consciousness for the ambiguous phenomenon of silence that can be experienced in many different ways, from comforting or illuminating, to oppressive and dangerous. |
