‘David and Rosemary’ is a story of a mother, Rosemary, who has been caring for her disabled son, David, for four decades. Their story, which I have been documenting for fifteen years takes place in Syracuse, NY. David was diagnosed at infancy with Prader-Willi syndrome. It is a genetic disorder where genes on chromosome 15 are missing on the paternal chromosome. It causes physical, mental and behavioral conditions Many families in the US that have a family member who is disabled are expected to take care of them without much assistance from the government. Disability has become a personal matter that is not discussed nor advocated enough in our society. Many individuals take for granted their able-bodied privileges. This short documentary shows the hardships and sacrifices that one woman makes to take care of her disabled son. |
