Beauty is an urban fairy tale, a daydream captured on film. A solitary hunchbacked character exists in a hidden alleyway, a concrete world strewn with refuse and pigeons. He is visited by a butterfly that inspires him to pursue the heights of love. Tragic-comically, he is rejected, out of circumstance and the contradiction inherent to his quest. Various idealistic notions of beauty inhabit the film, juxtaposed against the ugliness of actuality. Thematically, the film reflects on the tragic nature of beauty: humans seeking the sublime are destined to failure and tragedy; the greater and more impossible the heavens they seek, the more their make the natural grotesque. |
