Details:

Filmed in rural Russia, “Winter Note” is a poetic homage to childhood. Set in a deserted dacha settlement, the film travels alongside a narrator revisiting a summer house in the winter for the first time in many years. Lead by the recollections of a narrator, the camera flows along serene black and white landscapes, moves through empty roads, and arrives to a humble house. Images of the world within the house and surroundings underline the unchanging character of the place. It appears as if frozen in time since it was built in the 1970s. The narration reconstructs the past, when everything seemed more exciting and bigger to the storyteller. The film unfolds the story of two characters, whose presence in the film is rather suggested than directly indicated. The main figure, Alyosha, who resembles a renowned literary character, is observed from a distance, while the narrator never appears in the film. The film tells about different generations of the family reciting the same classic rhyme and carrying on the Russian tradition of memorizing poetry. The narrative itself is told by the naming of singular key objects, and thus connects the dots of memory - a concept inspired by a word-game called Associations, in which one player should guess a word-answer while his partner calls out clues through that word’s associations. Colorful and playful summer emotions are recalled in the film over white and still winter images. This contrast sharpens the recollections and emphasizes the continuation and timelessness of a place that remains preserved in a different era.
