‘How Mata Hari Lost Her Head and Found Her Body’ is a fantastical biography of the iconic dancer, courtesan, and spy executed for double espionage in the First World War. Reinventing Hari’s life according to the strange circumstances of her death- she was decapitated after execution and her head mysteriously stolen from the museum where it was displayed- the film imagines her as a striptease artist whose talent for removing her head takes Belle Epoque Paris by storm. Interweaving history and mythology, the result is a unique look into an era when Orientalism sold, scandal became success, and deviant desires equalled a crime punishable by death. |
