Maggie Crane (13) is obsessed with her video camera. With it, she catches everything. She catches her disturbed brother Jake (12) thrashing from yet another terrible nightmare about the squealing pigs. She catches her parents snorting coke when they believe no one is watching. And when she and her family are forced to move onto their Uncle Ollie’s farm, her camera catches even more of the bizarre. The stay is only supposed to last the summer while Maggie’s parents get things back in order, but Maggie is insatiably curious and points her camera at everything. With Jake’s help, they discover the ominous cornfield, the dark and gaping barn, and ultimately the pig pen that drive’s Jake to fear. He still has no idea why his nightmares always end with the shrieking squeals of tortured pigs. As the summer wears on, they spy Uncle Ollie and his increasingly strange behavior, almost always after hours. What is he doing in the pigpen so late at night, and are his activities tied to Jake’s nightmares? What are the strange symbols carved along the barn and cornfield markers? Why did Uncle Ollie invite them to stay in the first place? |
