Roused from retirement and isolation in her twilight years, Martha “Calamity Jane” Canary is compelled to tell her story to a stranger. Martha is as much an icon as she is a mystery. Born and raised in the heyday of the Old West, the tough-talking, cursing, drinking and sharp-shooting frontiers-woman has become a legend in her own right. Yet most of this legend is a facade created by none other than Martha herself. She made a living for herself telling grandiose stories about her unbelievable life, from her younger days traveling across the American frontier to her service in the U.S. Army as a scout. Though the recollection of her life and supposed deeds, one thing is certain: there was a distinct difference between Calamity Jane and Martha Canary. The Calamity Jane of legend is a tall-tale in her own right, performing amazing feats and single-handedly facing down armies with a steely glare and flawless aim. Yet Martha Canary is as warm and empathetic as anyone alive. She tends to the sick and injured, goes out of her way for strangers and secretly longs to be loved. From a traumatic childhood at the hands of an abusive father, to striking out on her own at an early age, Martha grows to develop the Calamity Jane persona as a means of both protection and recognition, eventually becoming one of the most famous female figures of her day. |
