Late Bloomers brings us into the surprising world of adult beginner ballet classes at the McBurney YMCA in New York City. Why are all these adults, aged 23 to 84, of all ethnics, shapes and sizes taking on the rigors of elite classical ballet training? In her first documentary, Director Annette Cyr, discovers, with gentle humor, the bursts of energy and moments of poignancy, the courage and camaraderie of her fellow ballet students. What do Cyr’s classmates have to show us about taking risks, self-esteem and about not letting ideals of excellence, prejudices of body image and age, get in the way of fully enjoying and exploring life? Are these beginning ballet students perhaps not so ordinary after all? |
