How do we relate to the past and what is our place in the future? Five men, aged between 17 and 71, come to Rievaulx Terrace to consider where in that world they think they belong. As they wander around a beautiful neoclassical folly looking to place themselves, they carry a figurative self image and a symbol of their life’s work. The things that they say are simultaneously comforting, surprising, funny and wise as they challenge the viewer to consider our constant reinterpretation of the past, whether what we create can ever be a valid representation of another time and ultimately, what it is to be a man in 21st century England. |
