Will uses nature recordings like narcotics, transforming the stress of urban existence. With headphones he smothers ringing phones and traffic with birdsong, waves and tranquility. But after he’s attacked in the street, animal noise merges into his own heartbeat, birdsong mutates into ominous police sirens: his private soundworld is infected with hostile reality. As Will struggles to work out what’s inside his headphones and what’s real, the audience is given clues as to what he’s running away from. LISTEN HARD is a hallucinatory short whose narrative emerges through the disjunction between what we see and what we hear. |
